Limoges Tips - Colors used in Porcelain Limoges Boxes

Did You Know that with each color, the Limoges porcelain has to be fired in the kiln?  Limoges boxes are hand-painted with beautiful designs in various colors.  The colors used are in powder form.  Powder is mixed with special oils and applied with a brush.  When gold is used, it is pure 24K Gold powder.   The more colors are used on the Limoges box, the more times it has to be fired in the kiln.  Each firing takes a few hours and the porcelain has to cool off for a few more hours before the next color is applied.  That is why the creation of the Limoges box is so labor-intensive.  The result, however, is a masterpiece - one to be truly cherished!

The Limoges Factory, a Misconception!

Many gift-buyers and even collectors are of the belief that there is a singular factory called "Limoges."  We are regularly asked such a questions as: "Has Limoges made such a model" or "Is this box produced by Limoges".  The inquirer is always surprised to hear that there is no singular "Limoges" factory!

Designer Wild Rose Coffret Limoges Box
(Beauchamp) Limoges boxes are produced throughout the Limoges region in central France. There are a few well-known factories still in existence in Limoges.  But mainly, Limoges boxes are produced by various artisans in small workshops.  The original method is preserved as when the production of Limoges porcelain first began in that region in the early 1700s.

Although there are many artists producing Limoges boxes in the Limousine region, the quality of their work varies considerably.  Some workshops hire students as painters which reduces the quality of their products.

At LimogesBoxCollector.com, we are proud to be the exclusive Authorized Dealer and Distributor for Beauchamp Limoges, producers of the highest quality Limoges boxes in Limoges, France.  Beauchamp Limoges selects and commissions the most talented and seasoned artists in Limoges to produce their exceptional Limoges boxes.  Each piece is truly a work of art.  Beauchamp Limoges offers an extensive variety, including many exclusive models.

An outstanding example is the 4-Hinged Fortified Castle.  This magnificent Limoges box is highly detailed throughout.  The Limoges box portrays various buildings with different designs and roof colors.  There is a fountain in the center of the village.

The three panels of the village open up and the fourth, at the base, reveals a beautifully hand-painted Fortified Castle with a Knight in Shining Armor!  A Lock and Key accompanies this magnificent work of art.

Of course, you will find numerous other styles on our website that will catch your fancy!  We hope that you find some of them absolutely irresistible!

A Limoges box to Commemorate Mont Saint Michel

For anyone visiting France, Mont Saint Michel is a definite MUST-SEE!  Located in Lower Normandy, close to Brittany in north-east France, this magical island stands inside a bay.

 Mont Saint Michel

Walking through the entrance, you enter the very tight winding streets with quaint shops and restaurants offering pastries, crepes and other French delicacies!  This enchanting village dates back to the 8th century.  You can climb to the top of this amazing village.  Located at the top is the magnificent abbey with a golden statue on top.  The climb is well worth it as it offers the most fantastic 360 degree view of the world around!

Marriage proposals are always among the most memorable events in one’s life.  To prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime occasion, many men are finding creative ways to make this wonderful event even more memorable – with a French porcelain Limoges box!

Many of our Limoges boxes have been purchased as a RING BOX for this special occasion.  But, the one that stands out the most in my mind, is a young man who purchased the adorable “Two Peas In A Pod” Limoges box to present his bride-to-be with that special ring.
